Can you improve on a team consisting of Polish setter Joanna Wolosz, Italian opposite Paola Egonu, outside hitters Kimberly Hill of USA and Miryam Sylla of Italy, middle blockers Robin De Kruijf of the Netherlands and Raphaela Folie of Italy, and, to top it all, Italian libero Monica De Gennaro?

Perhaps there is no need to.

These seven players are just some of the names on A. Carraro Imoco Conegliano stellar squad as they prepare to be one of the Champions League Volley “super finalists” this weekend.

The Italian team is for real and no wonder they are on an amazing winning streak of 63 consecutive matches in all competitions, the second leg of an 81-1 run, which started in September 2019 and included the last edition of the FIVB Volleyball Club World Championship in December.

In addition to being the reigning world champions, the club from Conegliano are also the reigning Italian champions, the reigning Italy Cup winners and the reigning Italy Super Cup laureates. The one big trophy that still escapes them is that of Europe’s Champions League and they are determined to make up for that omission on Saturday, May 1, at 17:00 local time in Verona, as they take on Turkish giant VakifBank Istanbul in a battle for the continental gold.

Imoco were on the podium in each of the last three completed editions of the Champions League, reaching the final twice and hoping that the upcoming third time will finally produce the much desired result and add the trophy to their impressive portfolio.

Arguably the world’s best opposite, Paola Egonu once again confirmed her status and the top shape she is in by hammering out a fantastic total of 82 points in the team’s two most recent matches that made up the national championship series against Igor Gorgonzola Novara. Her tally included 10 blocks, two aces and an average success rate of 59% in attack.

For Egonu and her teammates, the Champions League gold medal match, dubbed the Super Final, will be the closing game of a successful club season, after which most of them will have to turn their focus to the upcoming national team season as many of Imoco’s stars are also expected to shine at the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Italy and then at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.
